    PROJECT DESCRIPTION

    This project is aimed to design a system to monitor and control the Soil Moisture in the fields by using a wireless technology called GSM. Villages are the backbone of our nation. The farmers strive hard day and night to yield very good results in their farm. They know the entire process how to produce a farm, when to provide water to the farms etc. When it is the time to water the farms, they just stop their current works then and there and rush to the farms to start the pump sets to water the farms. This project provides an excellent solution to this process. The farmer need not go to the farm to water his field. It (motor) automatically gets ON/OFF by using GSM technology. The GSM Modem can accept any GSM network operator SIM card and act just like a mobile phone with its own unique phone number. Advantage of using this modem will be that you can use its RS232 port to communicate and develop embedded applications. Applications like SMS Control, data transfer, remote control and logging can be developed easily. The modem can either be connected to PC serial port directly or to any microcontroller. It can be used to send and receive SMS or make/receive voice calls. It can also be used in GPRS mode to connect to internet and do many applications for data logging and control. In GPRS mode you can also connect to any remote FTP server and upload files for data logging. This GSM modem is a highly flexible plug and play quad band SIM300 GSM modem for direct and easy integration to RS232 applications. Supports features like Voice, SMS, Data/Fax, GPRS and integrated TCP/IP stack. This project is designed in such a way that the GSM modem is interfaced to the controller through a line driver IC MAX232 along with a Humidity sensor and a motor. The microcontroller is programmed in such a way that it continuously monitors the humidity sensor, and based on the status of the sensor, it sends corresponding message to the user mobile indicating the status, with some delay. So based on the the status of the sensor, if the farmer wishes to water the field he sends the pre defined message to the GSM modem. So the GSM modem receives the message and passes it to the controller and the motor will be turned ON , as per the code logic. This project uses regulated 5V, 500mA power supply. 7805 three terminal voltage regulator is used for voltage regulation. Bridge type full wave rectifier is used to rectify the ac output of secondary of 230/12V step down transformer.
